Dragons Blown Away in Second Half.

Dragons Blown Away in Second Half.

Neil Mackey-Fitzsimons1 Mar - 21:40

We keep shooting ourselves in the foot! Mistakes again cost us the game.

Another sunday, Another trip down to the seaside.

After last weeks collapse, the boys were itching to get back out there. Peacehaven were waiting and after 3 weeks without a game you could tell that they were really up for it.

Peacehaven were sitting 2nd in the league and with only 2 losses all season, we knew that it would be a tough ask but we knew the boys would try their best.

Peacehaven's ground was a lovely 4g in their own stadium and a great experience for the boys to play on today.

Starting line up had to mix up a bit today with only 12 players available. Our back 5 did not change from last week with Oliver, Charlie, Cam, Toby and Dean taking their places. Jack was the base of the midfield today with Harley and Sam taking up the 10's position just in front. Lewis B came in on the right wing and Kieron took up his left wing spot while Stephen led the line. Lewis G was our option today from the sideline.

We set out strong and the first few minutes both teams were looking to get the upper hand and stamp their mark on the game. Peacehaven were good on the ball but we were also doing well with the ball, utilising the space and trying to work the ball forward.

We went behind after 7 minutes. We had a throw in on the right side that Peacehaven cut out. A long ball over the top and a flick on to the Striker who went through and calmly finished passed Oliver. 0-1

The game was struggling with the weather as the wind changed up and the high balls were causing both teams issues. When they got the ball down, it would hold up on the pitch but both teams were doing well. We were getting joy through Sam, Kieron, Harley and Lewis B. Both teams going at it, battling across the pitch and creating chances.

Lewis B was sent through by Sam and narrowly missed the target from just outside the area while Stephen was sent through and while trying to beat the on rushing keeper, lifted the ball just over the bar. Sam hit the post from a tight angle and Harley whipped in a great chance that was cleared by the keeper.

Lewis G came on with 10 minutes left in the first half for Lewis B. Harley pushed out to the right and Lewis G moved into the middle with Sam and Jack.

Toby, Cam, Charlie and Dean were working hard to keep Peacehaven at bay and even though Peacehaven came close a few times, Oliver and the defence held strong.

HT - Peacehaven - 1 - TD - 0

At the half, the boys were buoyant and ready to go again, we had to make a few changes with Charlie having pain in his knee. With this we moved to a 4-4-2 to give us a bit of balance with the players on the pitch.

We came out flying in the second half and we deserved to level the game at this point. Harley and Sam both came close to the equaliser but Peacehaven and their keeper held strong and pulled off some good stops.

With 10 minutes gone in the second half, this is where the game flipped. We worked the ball well down the right hand side, playing some really good football. A ball was sent from the right to the left with both Stephen and Lewis G overloading the left hand side and going through 2 on 1 with the keeper but Lewis G was leaning back and with his shot, sent it over the bar.

From the goal kick, a punt down field and a flick on from the winger, sent the striker through who again finished well into the near right hand post. 0-2

Now the next few minutes were a blur for me and honestly a frustrating passage of play. Honestly, we just capitulated, and the game went from 0-2 to 0-6. Mental, just so mental.

This seemed to kick us into gear and we went a bit more on the attack. Dean won the ball back on the left hand side and sending it up the wing, won us a corner. Jack ran out to take the throw quickly and sent it down the wing to Kieron. Kieron controlled it brilliantly and sent a pass through to Stephen. Stephen controlled it with the outside of his foot and while holding off the defender sent a fantastic dink over the keeper to the far right hand side of the goal, off the post. 1-6.

Now what got us here was the fact that we decided to play football and go on the front foot here. We started to stretch the defence and cause Peacehaven issues and we came close multiple times to adding to our goal. Harley went through twice, one on one with the keeper, The first time the shot wasn't quite there and the defender was able to get it away for a corner. The second one, the keeper pulled off an unbelievable stop, pushing it round the post with the slightest of touches. Kieron had a shot that was just wide, Stephen was sent through on goal and a nudge in the back from the defender gave the keeper the chance to smother the ball. Lewis G also came close as we won a header on the edge of the box and it dropped to him 10 yards out but again the keeper pulled off a great stop and held onto the ball.

Going all out to push for the next goal, we got caught short at the back and gave away a corner with a minute left. The ball was swung in and even though we won the first header, the Peacehaven midfielder met it on the volley from the edge of the area and it flew into the net for 1-7.

FT - PEACEHAVEN - 7 - TD - 1

Honestly, Peacehaven are a top team and will be in the title picture towards the end of the season but for the second week running, a 10 minute period in the second half cost us a result. We were in the game and with a chance to get a positive result but shot ourselves in the foot again and gave away silly chances. Peacehaven were ruthless and took the gifts. I said it last week but we need to learn from these mistakes to give ourselves the best chance to finish this season strong. We have an interesting run of games left and now need to go out and show that we are a brilliant team.

Boys, we have got this, I believe in you, we all believe in you and know that you can keep going from here.

MOTM - Sam R - A battling performance from Sam. Relentlessly running all 80 minutes, working hard across the midfield and leading by example. Sam will always give you 7 or 8 out of 10 minimum. Our Declan Rice.
