Dragons take the Win for an Important 3 points

Dragons take the Win for an Important 3 points

Neil Mackey-Fitzsimons16 Mar - 17:46

Stephen with Nerves of Steel to score the winner.

With the double Header, we had around 30 minutes between the games but our boys were out and ready after 10. They wanted the win and wanted to get the 3 points we felt like we deserved.

After an intense team talk at the end of the last match, the boys were frustrated, disappointed and inquisitive to how we lost that last game. They knew what we had to do and listened while Nigel, Darren and Neil spoke with them.

A few changes to the line up to start with Dorian coming in for Stephen and Ethan coming in for Toby at the back. We moved it around a bit and again we wanted to have a quick start.

The half's ended up being 22.5 minutes long so the boys knew they needed to get a leg into the game quick. We started strong with Dorian, Kieron and Stan linking up well on the left hand size, causing chaos down that wing and creating several chances while Harley, Sam and Lewis B were brilliant down the right linking really well.
We had a few chances drift wide but were holding well. Again a lack of awareness caught us off guard and from a throw in, the Lindfield midfield came storming through, controlled the ball with the outside of his foot and hit an absolute rocket into top left hand corner from the right corner of the box. 1-0

With less than 5 gone it was so frustrating to concede but the boys didn't let their heads drop. We continued to create chances throughout the half with some great deliveries into the box.

Our first goal of the day came from a brilliant bit of work from a corner. Lewis W, who had come on for Jack at this point, whipped in one of his signature corners, right on the penalty spot for Sam to beat his man and knock the ball down into the path of Kieron. Kieron using his poachers instinct swung at the ball with his left foot and sent the shot in the far side of the goal. 1-1

HT Lindfield - 1 v TD - 1

The levels of intensity and high pressing was starting to take its toll on a few of the players who had given their all. Dean came off at the half for Stephen to go in at Left back, Toby came back in for Cam and Freddie came back on for Kieron.

We encouraged the boys to go out there in the second half, continue to play their football and the chance to win the game would come.

They took the game to Lindfield right from Kick off, Pressing them and only giving them an outlet with the long ball.
With 5 minutes gone, a long ball from the CB went over the heads of our defence and if not from a last ditch tackle from Stephen, it could of been game done.

Oliver was quick off his line from the resulting corner and we were doing well with Toby, Ethan and Stephen winning nearly everything in the air.

After about 10 minutes Jack came on to give Harley a breather as H had been running himself into the ground the whole game. Jack slotted in at LB, pushed Stephen forward and Dorian back to the right hand side. Kieron had come back on for Sam to have a breather with Sam giving everything for the team again.
We dominated the second half with Stephen and Dorian getting a lot of joy down the wings and creating chances for Kieron and Freddie just with the lack of finish to match.

With 5 minutes to go we went all out and bought Sam back on for Freddie to go up to with Kieron and this paid off. Ethan won a header into the midfield and Toby was quickest to it before hitting a great knock over the top to Dorian. D looked up and put in a brilliant cross that enticed the keeper off his line. The ball dropped at the feet of Kieron who shot but was blocked by one defender before the ball dropped at the feet of Sam. Sam hit a rocket towards goal that was only stopped by the outstretched arm of the defender on the line. Penalty!

Now please forgive me if I go on a little with this description but Stephen stepped up to take it. Our first penalty since the one he missed against Eastbourne and something he was so sure on taking to redeem himself and payback his teammates for their support and love.

Stan held the ball firm in his hand, protecting the penalty spot from Lindfield players and stopping them getting in Stephen's head. Brilliant from Stan!

Stephen put the ball down on the spot, focused and slotted the ball into the bottom right corner sending the keeper the wrong way! 1-2!

We kept the ball from here with our Defence standing strong and Sam, Kieron and Dorian almost getting us another goal right at the end!

FT - LINDFIELD - 1 V TD - 2

A brilliant performance from the lads to come back from being a goal down again. The fighting spirit and determination showed and they deserved more than just 3 points today across both games.

MOTM- Stephen Mackey-F - A brilliant second half performance from Stephen, Filling in at left back, important tackles and headers before creating chances going forward and ultimately stepping up and scoring the winner.
