Dragons Downed Despite dominance in First of Double Header

Dragons Downed Despite dominance in First of Double Header

Neil Mackey-Fitzsimons16 Mar - 17:03

Harley B Brilliant despite the defeat.

Our first in Back to back double headers today and our opponents were a familiar sight from last season. Lindfield won our division and did the double over us in two close matches last season so the boys wanted to go out there and show why we are in a brilliant position this season and that it is no fluke.

We started with a relatively strong side, Oliver in goal, Toby, Cam & Dean at the back with Lewis W, Jack, Stephen and Harley starting in the midfield and then Kieron, Sam and Freddie Up top. We had a strong bench and knowing it was a double header, we didn't want to show our full hand right from the off.

Now I cant quite explain it but we seem to be having a lot of slow starts recently, either the boys are not having their weetabix or we seem to build up a head of steam after going behind and today was no different. Literally around 30 seconds after kick off, we misplaced a few passes in the forward line and sent a pass out for a throw on our right hand side. Lindfield reacted quickest and before we could react, the ball was thrown over the top of our defence and their winger snuck in and finished well under our keeper. 1-0

This seemed to gee the boys up but it shouldn't take conceding a goal to get the boys up for the game.

We then took the game to Lindfield, doing our best to push them back but were held to a few snapshots in the first half and nothing that troubled the keeper too much.

HT - Lindfield - 1 v TD - 0

A rocket was needed at half time and the boys knew it, They spoke to us what they wanted from the second half and how they could get it. Talking to each other and kicking it up a gear.

After a quick start from us, we took it to Lindfield and despite them playing some good football, We were more than equipped to take them on head on.

It took about 10 minutes before the first change was made with Stan coming on for Lewis W and then Lewis B coming in for Freddie O but going to RB and us switching to a 4-4-2 for the remainder of this match. Despite the grumbles we did start to get a bit more luck attacking wise and if it wasn't for Lindfield's keeper pulling off several brilliant saves from Stan, it could of been a different score line. Stan had a brilliant shot just tipped over and not long after had one just tipped round the post. Sam also came close and Harley had been running their left back ragged before putting in some fantastic crosses that we were just second best too.

With about 2 minutes left of the first game, we switched off and let the long ball bounce over our heads which allowed their winger to go through down their left and was just pulled back outside the area. A late whistle from the ref and a bit of confusion on our part meant we didn't organise the wall or line when needed and Lindfield put a peach of a cross in that was met at the back post for 2-0.

FT - Lindfield - 2 v TD - 0

Despite having a majority of the ball and then limiting Lindfield to 2 chances we were ultimately undone by switching off at 2 points in the game. A tough one to take but we knew we couldn't dwell on it too much as we had the second match coming right up after.
Some frustrated heads at the end of the game but after calming it down a bit we knew what we needed to do to get the next 3 points up for grabs.

MOTM- Harley Bunce - A Fantastic showing from Harley, Driving at the defence, pushing the team forward and delivering some great crosses into the box. Didn't give up and continued running until the final whistle!
